Adding a Counsel Item

This article describes the process for adding Counsel entries. A single counsel can be assigned to multiple parties.

NOTE: You must have Add permission to Case > Counsel Tab.

To add a Counsel item:

  1. From within a Case Folder, select the Counsel tab.

  2. On the list view, click the + Add button above the Counsel grid.

  3. A new Counsel screen will display.

  4. Enter the appropriate details into each section:

Contact Information

  • Counsel – Use the search field to locate the Counsel name in your Neos database.

  • Address, Phone, Email, AKA – These fields will fill with data tied to the selected Counsel. Changes can only be made on the Party or Provider tab.

  • Cert/Notice Filing Order – The Filing Order number determines a) the order counsel will appear in the Counsel tab list view and b) the order counsel names, and their default address will appear when using the List and Paragraph tags in document assembly. The next sequence number will automatically populate; however, it can be changed. The first Counsel will default to 1.

    • Enter zero (0) to EXCLUDE counsel from generated documents (e.g., your firm's attorney). This number can be duplicated.

    • Enter 1 or greater to INCLUDE counsel in generated documents (i.e., counsel that your firm will serve). Entries must have a unique Filing Order number.

NOTE: The Certification of Service in List/Paragraph tags will exclude Counsel tab entries marked with a zero (0) Filing Order number. The Cert Of Srv Order tag (found in the Word Add-in: Case > Counsel) only lists the Filing Order number of the single selected Counsel during document assembly (e.g., 1).

  • Bar Number – The bar number is automatically pulled from the Bar Number field of the selected Provider.

Relation To Case

  • Representing – Select or search for the Party of the Counsel's client. If an attorney is representing multiple parties, you can now select all the people they represent in a single Counsel entry. The Role of each selected Party will be displayed.

  • Representing, Role, Relationship – These fields will fill with data tied to the selected Representing Party. Changes to these fields can only be made on the Party tab.

Comments

Enter comments about this attorney or firm that are specific to the case.
