This article details the different types of fields found in Neos, including date fields, edit name fields, number fields, money fields, searchable name fields, and user defined fields. Several field types contain advanced functionality, and many require validation rules before a screen can be saved.
Field Validation
Required fields are those that must contain data to save the current screen. These fields will contain a red asterisk and border when the field is empty, and the Save button will be disabled until these fields are satisfied.
Date Field
A date can be manually typed into the field, following the displayed format (MM/dd/yyyy), or pasted using Ctrl+V, or by right-clicking the field and selecting Paste. Spaces surrounding a pasted value are ignored. The cursor moves and Backspace deletes one character at a time, the same as in a standard text field. Press Enter to commit an entry. Press Escape to cancel an entry and revert to the value the field held before. When the field is empty, it will display a greyed-out MM/dd/yyyy format hint.
NOTE: An entry the field cannot read, or a date outside the allowed range, will not be saved. The field will return to the value it held before the entry, or remain empty if it was already empty.
Disabled and read-only fields do not accept a pasted value.
Date fields in Neos also display a calendar icon at the end of the field. Click the calendar icon to open the Date Navigator window to assist in selecting a date. Today's date will be outlined. Click the left
or right
arrows to move to the previous or next month in the current year. To select a different month or year, click the month/year header at the top and navigate to months within the selected year or to other years.
Select the desired date to insert it into the date field instantly. You can also calculate a date (such as a deadline due 45 days from today) by clicking the Date calculator text.
Date and Time Field
A Date and Time field displays a date input and a time input side by side. Type or paste a value into either input the same way as a standalone Date field or Time field.
Clearing the date input empties the date only. The time input keeps its previously entered value. Selecting or entering a new date combines it with the retained time.
NOTE: If the date is required, the record cannot be saved with the date cleared.
Date Range Field
Date fields that utilize a start and end date range, such as in reports, also include a left side pane where you can select a period of time in a single click. Choose from Today, Yesterday, Past week, Past month, Past 3 months, and Past year. The date range window will close and insert that period of time in the selected range field.
Custom Range is the default selection where you can pick the Start Date and then the End Date range. The current date is outlined. The selected dates will populate the Start Date (e.g., Jul 7, 2026) and End Date (e.g., Aug 1, 2026) at the window header.
Click Apply to save your custom date range.
Click Cancel to abort your selections.
Time Field
Dedicated time fields (without a date), such as in Mass Update and Advanced Search > Report Subscription, display a clock icon at the end of the field. Time fields default to 12:00 AM.
Select the icon to scroll to the desired time, in increments of 30 minutes.
You can also type the desired time directly, following the displayed format (hh:mm a) or as "AM" or "PM" (e.g., 12:45 PM), or paste a complete time value using Ctrl+V or by right-clicking the field and selecting Paste. The cursor moves and Backspace deletes one character at a time, the same as in a standard text field. Press Enter to commit an entry. Press Escape to cancel an entry and revert to the value the field held before. When the field is empty, it will display a greyed-out hh:mm a format hint.
NOTE: An entry the field cannot read will not be saved. The field will return to the value it held before the entry, or remain empty if it was already empty.
Disabled and read-only fields do not accept a pasted value.
Edit Names Field
An Edit Names field can be identified by the Edit icon located at the end of a field. Examples of Edit fields can be found on the Party Tab for entering the Party Name, AKA Name, and Party Address. When the Edit icon is clicked, a new window will display (such as Name Details, AKA Details, or Edit Address) in which to make changes.
Enter the updated details and click the Save button to keep changes.
Editable Text Fields
Editable text fields are distinguishable by a cursor when hovering over a field. Text fields can be modified by placing your cursor in the field and clicking to display edit mode. Once modified, click the Save button to keep changes.
Custom text fields can be resized by clicking the two lines
on the bottom right of a field and using the double arrows
cursor to increase or decrease the field size.
When changes on the screen are saved, the adjusted field size is also saved.
Content inside text fields can be printed by highlighting the desired text and Ctrl + P. On the Print window, click the More Settings arrow and select the "Selection only" checkbox under the Options group.
Money Field
Money fields display the entered value with US currency formatting. Click into a money field to start typing.
When a value is entered, the currency will show in black text.
Some money fields contain a calculator, such as Amount on the Value Tab of a Case Folder.
Click the calculator icon
to display the Calculate Value Amount window. Refer to Adding Value Items for more details.
Number Field
Number fields are displayed with up and down arrows at the end of the field. Click the up arrow to increase the number by one. Click the down arrow to decrease the number by one. These types of standard fields can be found when adding a Primary Checklist item to a Case from the Checklist Tab.
Searchable Names Field
Searchable Names fields can be identified by a Search icon
at the beginning of a field. When entering a name into this type of field, simply enter a fragment of the name and click the search icon or hit the ENTER key to search if the name already exists in your firm's database. Entering only the beginning fragment of a name helps prevent duplications or misspellings and assists with conflict searching. Refer to Accessing Neos Search for additional details on searching in Neos.
Select a Party
Select a Contact
When creating user defined fields, the Searchable Names field type should be used if the response is a person or entity. By doing so, the name will become part of your firm's names database, assisting in conflict searches and can be easily located in Advanced Search. If the name will never be relevant in connection with any other case in Neos, consider using the alphanumeric field type.
Selection Field Types
Selection fields are those that contain a list of items. Some fields only allow one item to be selected, such as Assigned To Staff fields of a Case or User Mini Directory User Defined fields. In these fields, the current selection can be removed by clicking the X in the right of the field.
Some fields, such as the Case/Intake Primary Staff require a selection to be made and will display a required validation when empty.
Other selection fields allow for many items to be selected, such as Calendar Staff or Report filter fields. Click the field title, selection text (not X) or dropdown arrow to display the list of options from which to choose.
When more than three items are selected, the number of additional items will display. Click the number of additional items to expand the field and view all selected items. Click Hide to return to the condensed view. In these fields, particular selections can be removed by clicking the blue X to the left of each selected item. To remove all selections, click the black X in the right of the field.
These field types have been enhanced to fully display options that contain long descriptions.
User Defined Field Types
Types of user defined fields are available for use when designing user defined screens while customizing Neos. Refer to Accessing the Case Fields Directory for the full list of field types.
