Google Chrome is a powerful and popular browser that many rely on for day-to-day activities, including accessing Neos. However, when the browser is running in the background, it can use plenty of RAM (random-access memory) and potentially slow down functions in Neos.
When you have many browser tabs open, Chrome splits every tab and extension into its own process, so if one process (tab) crashes, it will not abort all tabs in the browser window. This feature can cause higher memory usage, as well as any browser extensions you have installed.
Always upgrade to the latest version of Google Chrome – M89 is said to save up to 22% of memory in the browser process, 8% in the renderer, and 3% in the GPU. Overall responsiveness is set to improve by 9%. For more information, review Google Chrome's Blog.
This article describes ways to limit Google Chrome memory usage and free up RAM.
To limit memory usage in Chrome:
NOTE: It is recommended to save your data and close Chrome before performing these steps.
Close Unused Tabs – The more open tabs, the more RAM that is being used. Simply click the "X" to the right of the tab to close unused tabs.
Remove/Disable Browser Extensions – Uninstall or disable any extensions you don't use to free up memory. Some extensions or toolbars can conflict with loading a website. In Chrome, select the Menu button (three dots button on top right of the browser) and hover over More tools, then click Extensions. Click the Remove button to completely uninstall an extension.
Preload pages for faster browsing and searching – Uses cookies to quickly load a webpage. In Chrome, select the Menu button (three dots button on top right of browser) and open Settings. Scroll down to the Advanced section and under Privacy and security, toggle on the Preload pages for faster browsing and search option.
Reset or Reinstall Chrome – If you have tried all previous steps and Neos is still lagging, you can uninstall and reinstall Google Chrome.
